James O'Brien appointed US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia

(Patria) - The US Senate confirmed the appointment of James O'Brien as Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia.

His appointment was supported by 67 senators, while 31 members of the upper house of Congress voted against it, it was announced yesterday on the US Senate's Twitter profile.

O'Brien was appointed Assistant Secretary of State by US President Joe Biden on May 19.

He has been with the State Department since 1989. During his long career, he also dealt with the Balkans, as special presidential envoy and participant in peace negotiations on Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.

In the administration of Barack Obama, he was the special envoy for hostage affairs, and in 2021, Biden appointed him coordinator for sanctions at the State Department, reports RSE.
