Strong earthquake hit Turkey and Greece: There are injured

(Patria) - A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2 hit the area near the Dodecanese islands on the Turkish border in the Mediterranean during the night. The earthquake occurred at 11:17 PM local time, 18 kilometers from the island of Rhodes, at a depth of 68 kilometers, EMSC reported. Turkish media reported early this morning that a 14-year-old girl tragically died in the earthquake, which they claim was magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale, while a total of 69 people were injured.

A second earthquake of magnitude 5.8 shook the Turkish coastal city of Marmaris. According to the Turkish disaster management agency and local authorities, at least seven people were injured. The governor of Marmaris, Idris Akbiyik, said that some people were injured jumping from windows and balconies in panic, but there was no serious damage to buildings.

The ground shaking was felt throughout southern Greece, western Turkey, and the coastal areas along the Aegean Sea. Authorities on both sides of the border are still assessing the damage, and emergency response teams remain on standby for possible aftershocks.

This is another in a series of earthquakes hitting the seismically very active area of the Aegean Sea, especially the region around Rhodes and the Turkish coast, where the Hellenic subduction zone and ground stress zones meet.
