The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution demanding an end to the construction of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The United States abstained.
The resolution calls on Israel to "immediately cease all settlement construction activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem".
It emphasizes that Israel's activities constitute a violation of international law.
The resolution was adopted with 14 votes in favour, to applause. It is the first resolution on Israeli-Palestinian relations that the Security Council has adopted in almost eight years, Reuters reports.
Palestinians: A day of victory for international law
Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said:
- This is a day of victory for international law, a victory for civilized discourse and negotiation skills, and a complete rejection of extremist forces in Israel. The international community has told the people of Israel that the way to achieve security is not through occupation, but through peace, ending the occupation, and establishing a Palestinian state that will live alongside the state of Israel within the 1967 borders.
The spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the Security Council's decision was a blow to Israeli policy.
Israel's ambassador to the UN criticized the US abstention, saying there was no doubt that the new US administration would usher in a new era of UN-Israel relations.
Newly elected US President Donald Trump commented on Twitter.
- As for the UN, things will be different after January 20, Trump said.
