(Patria) - Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir said on Wednesday that Israeli commandos secretly operated inside Iran during the twelve-day war between the two countries, Al Arabiya reported.
“We achieved complete control over Iranian airspace and at every location where we decided to operate,” said Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir in a televised address.
“This was made possible, among other things, by coordination and tactical deception carried out by our air force and ground commando units,” he added. “The forces operated secretly deep inside enemy territory and created operational freedom of action for us.”
Both countries declared victory in the conflict since a ceasefire came into effect on Tuesday. The war broke out on June 13 when Israel launched a surprise bombing campaign it said was aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons – an ambition Iran consistently denies.
Zamir was the first Israeli official to publicly say that Israeli soldiers operated on the ground in Iran.
“The campaign is not over yet,” he added. “We must remain vigilant. Many challenges await us.”
