(Patria) – An increasing number of Americans are criticizing the Israeli offensive on Gaza, and former US President Donald Trump stated that he is surprised by the weakening influence of the Israeli lobby in Washington.
In an interview with Daily Caller, held in the Oval Office on Friday and published on Monday, Trump recalled that two decades ago Israel had “the strongest lobby in Congress, stronger than any other,” but that is no longer the case.
“Israel was the strongest. Today, it no longer has such a strong lobby. Unbelievable. There was a time when you couldn’t speak ill of Israel if you wanted to be a politician. But today you have AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) and three others, and all these crazies, and they have really changed things,” Trump said.
According to a Pew Center study from March, 53 percent of adult Americans today have a negative view of Israel, compared to 42 percent in 2022. Skepticism towards continued support for Israel is also growing within the MAGA movement “America First”.
A new Quinnipiac University poll showed that 60 percent of American voters do not support sending additional military aid to Israel — the highest level of opposition since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Half of the respondents, including 77 percent of Democrats, believe that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
