SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Israeli forces entered the Al-Qibali mosque in Jerusalem today, within the Al-Aqsa complex, Palestinian officials announced, reported by Anadolu Agency.
"At least ten Israeli police officers stormed the Al-Qibali mosque after attacking three guards - stated Firas al-Dibs, spokesperson for the Jerusalem Waqf under Jordanian administration (responsible for the care of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem), according to the statement.
Al-Dibs stated that the Israeli police also arrested two Palestinians inside the complex near the Al-Rahma gate, which leads to the mosque of the same name, Patria reports.
Israel closed the Bab al-Rahma mosque in 2003, and an Israeli court renewed the closure order in 2017.
Tensions have been rising in Jerusalem since February, when Israeli police briefly closed the Al-Rahma gate (located near the eastern wall of the Old City in Jerusalem) - a move that caused a strong Palestinian reaction.
Over the past two months, Israeli authorities have banned numerous Palestinians (including religious officials) from entering the Al-Aqsa complex, which Muslims worldwide consider the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. It later annexed the territory in 1980, but that move was not recognized by the international community.
