(Patria) - Five Israeli soldiers were killed and three seriously wounded in friendly fire in the northern Gaza Strip, the Israeli Defense Forces announced.
According to Israeli media, the soldiers were killed yesterday by friendly fire from Israeli tanks during clashes with Hamas militants.
Reports indicate that a tank hit a building in the Jabalia refugee camp where the soldiers were stationed. The tank crew mistook their soldiers for armed Palestinians.
The daily newspaper "The Jerusalem Post" writes that the armored vehicles were under heavy fire from anti-tank missiles at the time, so they closed the turret and the driver's optics for protection.
According to Israeli army data, 626 soldiers have been killed and around 3,500 wounded in fighting since the start of the war in Gaza.
