Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert has been permanently banned from entering the Gaza Strip by the Israeli government, having first been turned back in October. He called the move unacceptable, writes bbc.com, reports the BH news agency Patria.
Israel cited security reasons for imposing the ban. Dr. Gilbert has been treating patients in Gaza for decades and worked at Shifa Hospital even during Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip.
He claims he never violated any rules that would warrant a ban from Gaza, but that Israeli authorities were angered by his open reporting on the situation in Gaza during the attacks.
The fundamental reason for the poor health of the population in Gaza is, of course, the siege and bombing - he said.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Nahshon said that Dr. Gilbert hides behind the guise of a humanitarian doctor and that an investigation is underway.
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reacted, stating that they will challenge this ban. Dr. Gilbert was also one of the signatories of a letter against Israeli aggression published in the medical journal Lancet in July.
He also described the scenes at Shifa Hospital this summer as the worst he had ever seen.
