Israeli authorities have removed all remaining security measures at the entrance to the complex housing the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, reports the Patria agency.
After metal detectors were removed on Tuesday, the infrastructure for so-called smart cameras that Israel intended to install instead of detectors was also removed, all in accordance with the demands of the Muslim religious administration Waqf, which is responsible for the site holy to Jews as well, Israeli media report.
However, the administration decided that the morning prayers would be held outside the sanctuary today.
Israeli security forces announced that they are ready for Friday, when a large number of worshippers are expected in the mosque complex for Friday prayers, and there are fears that conflicts could escalate again.
Muslim leaders have told worshippers to continue praying outside the holy site until they decide how to proceed after Israel's move.
One of the Hamas leaders stated via his Twitter profile that the removal of metal detectors represents a "historic victory" for the Palestinian people.
- Today our people celebrate the removal of the gates, tomorrow they will celebrate the removal of the occupation itself – Hamas stated.
Clashes began on July 14 after the murder of two Israeli police officers, after which Israeli security forces killed six Palestinian demonstrators, and hundreds of people were injured in the clashes.
