(Patria) - Israel will stop supplying electricity to the Gaza Strip, announced yesterday Energy Minister Eli Cohen, a week after halting the entry of humanitarian aid into the enclave in order to exert pressure on Hamas.
- I have just signed an order to immediately stop supplying electricity to the Gaza Strip. Enough talk, it is time for action - Cohen said in a short video clip.
The only power line between Israel and Gaza powers the main water desalination plant in the Palestinian territory, which serves more than 600,000 people.
Residents of Gaza mainly rely on solar panels and gasoline generators for electricity.
- We will use all means at our disposal to return all hostages and ensure that Hamas is no longer in Gaza the day after the war - Cohen added.
Israel and the Palestinian movement accuse each other of violating the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on January 19, the first phase of which expired on March 1.
After the halt of humanitarian aid entry into the Gaza Strip a week ago, humanitarian organizations warn of dramatic consequences for about two million residents.
