TEL AVIV, (Patria) - The Israeli army announced that early this morning local time, Iranian forces, from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, fired about 20 projectiles and rockets at Israeli targets on that plateau, and that the attack was responded to, with "Iranian military positions in Syria" being the target, Al Jazeera reports.
Israeli army spokesperson Jonathan Conricus said Israel intercepted several rockets, Reuters reports.
Conricus stated that there were no losses on the Israeli side and that the damage to Israeli positions was limited, without providing details.
According to him, Israel views this incident with seriousness and has responded to it, Tanjug reports.
Israeli rockets hit several air defense sites, a radar site, and an ammunition depot in Syria, Syrian state media announced, Hina reports.
The Syrian news agency Sana announced that the Syrian air defense shot down dozens of Israeli rockets, but that some of them managed to hit air defense sites, a radar, and an ammunition depot. It also added that some of the Israeli rockets were shot down south of the city of Homs.
Earlier, the Israeli army announced that several sirens, warning of an air attack, were heard in the Golan Heights area.
The sirens sounded early Thursday morning local time, it was stated in a brief announcement.
Israel has been on heightened alert in recent days, as a precaution against possible retaliation from Iran, AP notes.
Iran had threatened retaliation against the country after blaming Israel for a series of devastating airstrikes on Iranian positions in Syria.
