(Patria) - Early this morning, Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran, carrying out what was officially characterized as a "preemptive strike". Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the start of the attacks, leading to a new drastic escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
State of Emergency and Fear of Retaliation
Due to fears of an immediate response from Tehran, the Israeli government has urgently declared a state of emergency throughout the country. Intelligence services estimate a strong Iranian retaliation is expected in a very short period, which could include swarms of armed drones and ballistic missiles aimed at Israeli cities.
The population across Israel is on full alert, and authorities are urging citizens to stay near protected areas and shelters.
Explosions in the Heart of Tehran
At the same time, dramatic news is coming from the capital of Iran. According to initial reports from Iranian media, at least three powerful explosions were heard early this morning in the very center of Tehran.
The Iranian news agency Fars states that it has received reports from the ground confirming that several missiles directly hit the "Republic" area in the Iranian capital. Details about potential casualties and the exact extent of material damage have not yet been officially confirmed, but it is clear that Israeli strikes deep into Iranian territory are already underway.
The Israeli Home Front Command has ordered the public to conduct only essential activities across the country following the attack on Iran.
The newly announced restrictions prohibit public gatherings, going to work, and going to school.
An exception has been made for what Israel calls "exceptional sectors".
According to the New York Times, the US and Israel jointly attacked Iran.
A US official stated that American military strikes on Iran are underway.
The attacks were carried out on Saturday morning, the first working day of the week in Iran, while millions of people were at work and children were in schools. Residents of Tehran describe scenes of panic and chaos.
According to the Iranian newspaper Shargh, thick smoke is rising from a district in Tehran where Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is usually located. Residents have also reported smoke from that area, which also houses the presidential palace and the National Security Council.
