Israel and Iran exchange accusations at UN over endangering Middle East peace

(Patria) - Israel and Iran exchanged accusations over endangering peace in the Middle East at a United Nations meeting convened after Israel attacked Iranian military targets, AFP reported.

Israel carried out airstrikes on military locations in Iran on Saturday in response to Tehran's missile attack on Israel on October 1. The latter was retaliation for the killing of Hamas leaders supported by Iran and a commander of the Revolutionary Guard.

At the UN Security Council meeting, requested by Iran, both countries stated they have the right to self-defense.

"Israel's aggression against Iran is evident and does not occur in isolation. This aggressive attack is part of a broader, ongoing pattern of aggression and unchecked impunity with which Israel continues to destabilize the entire region," said Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani.

He added that Israel's "persistent and systematic violation of international law" and military engagements in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen should draw "unequivocal condemnation" from the Security Council.

The ambassador reiterated Iran's threat to retaliate following Israel's weekend airstrikes, but said Tehran prefers diplomacy.

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said his country defended itself after Iran's missile attacks on October 1.

"We promised that their actions would not go unanswered," Danon said.

"Iran has sown violence, chaos, and destruction throughout the Middle East. But this violence is not limited to Israel's borders. It threatens regional stability, global security, and economic stability".

"Today it is us. Israel is at their crossroads. But tomorrow it could be any of the nations represented here. Make no mistake," Danon said, calling for strong sanctions against Iran, especially to prevent the development of nuclear weapons.
