Israel to expand ground operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah

(Patria) - The Israeli army will expand its ground operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah, the chief of staff said yesterday, warning that the offensive against the group is still in its early stages, AFP reported.

"The operation against the terrorist organization Hezbollah has only just begun... This is a prolonged operation," Major General Eyal Zamir said in a statement.

"We are now preparing to advance targeted ground operations and strikes according to an organized plan," he added.

Zamir's comments followed Israeli strikes on multiple targets in southern Lebanon on Sunday, including a key bridge.

Lebanon was drawn into the war when Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel on March 2nd to avenge the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in an Israeli-American attack.

Israel sent troops into Lebanon and carried out extensive airstrikes, while Hezbollah launched rocket barrages.

"In recent weeks, we have achieved significant accomplishments: we have attacked more than 2,000 targets, dozens of weapons depots, and attacked and eliminated hundreds of terrorists," Zamir said.

"We will not stop until the threat is removed from the border and long-term security is ensured for the residents of northern Israel," Zamir said.
