Election Night: Americans view elections as an opportunity to speak on core issues

The US Embassy organized an "Election Night" in Sarajevo tonight on the occasion of the elections being held in that country today.

Ambassador Maureen Cormack addressed numerous guests, including many familiar faces from BiH's political life.

- You have probably already noticed that this year we are focusing on a segment of our process, which are the federal states where the electoral process is unpredictable, and their impact on the elections. Tonight, we are highlighting some aspects of American culture, so-called unpredictable states like Florida, Nevada, and Ohio, which make us truly unique.

The American democratic process is unique in many ways thanks to the principles on which our country was founded. The founders of our nation ensured not only that our people are responsible for deciding who the next president will be, but they also ensured that the US will always be a country defined by common democratic values that protect our fundamental human rights.

 We are a nation driven by diversity, creativity, and perseverance; as such, Americans view elections as an opportunity to speak on core issues that sometimes divide American society, and voting is a key part of the democratic process, as is the case in all free and fair elections around the world. Elections in the US provide an opportunity not only to choose the person who will represent them but also to highlight issues that are important to them.

One of the key principles is the peaceful transfer of power. The State Department and embassies around the world will work with the newly elected president to ensure a peaceful transfer of power, as has been the case with every newly elected president in the past 200 years.
