Istanbul: Earthquake Damaged 1,025 Buildings

(Patria) - Turkish Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum says that over a thousand buildings suffered minor damage in the earthquake that hit Istanbul on Wednesday.

"According to the results of the damage assessment, 15,013 structures were inspected in 39 districts of Istanbul, of which 1,025 suffered minor damage, and 12,398 were undamaged," Kurum announced on social network X, adding that the damage assessment is ongoing.

Most of the damage reports from citizens came from densely populated areas in the west of the city - Bahçelievler and Esenler.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Sea of Marmara off the coast of Istanbul on Wednesday, followed by aftershocks, the Turkish Disaster Management Authority announced.

236 people were injured, and according to seismologists, aftershocks are possible for some time to come.

Dozens of aftershocks were recorded on Friday, one of which was 4.3 on the Richter scale.
