Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir resigns

(Patria) - Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir said today she will resign and run for president, public broadcaster RUV and daily Morgunblaðið reported.

It is still unknown who will succeed Jakobsdóttir as prime minister, a position she has held since 2017.

- I have decided to ask to be relieved of the position of Prime Minister of Iceland and to run in the upcoming presidential election - Jakobsdóttir said in a video message.

Iceland will hold presidential elections on June 1, a role that is largely ceremonial and does not involve making public policy decisions.

The island nation of nearly 400,000 people faces uncertainty after recent volcanic eruptions forced thousands of people to evacuate indefinitely, further disrupting an economy already grappling with high inflation and rising interest rates.
