UN sanctions reimposed on Iran after failed nuclear talks, Iranian minister sends letter to Guterres

(Patria) - Extensive United Nations sanctions have been reimposed on Iran after the latest nuclear deal negotiations failed, while France, Great Britain, and Germany have warned Tehran to avoid "escalatory moves."

"The re-imposition of UN sanctions is not the end of diplomacy," the foreign ministers of the three European countries, known as the E3, said in a joint statement on Sunday.

"We call on Iran to refrain from any escalatory moves and to return to respecting its legally binding obligations under the safeguards," they stated.

The return of sanctions on Iran was triggered by three countries in the UN Security Council (Germany through the other two) due to accusations that the country violated the 2015 agreement, which aimed to prevent the development of a nuclear bomb.

Iran denies seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to prevent the revival of UN sanctions enforcement mechanisms after they were reimposed on Tehran.

According to him, there is no legal basis for this.

"We call on you to prevent any attempt to revive the sanctions mechanisms, including the Sanctions Committee and the Panel of Experts," Araghchi wrote in a letter published on X.

In the letter, Araghchi claims that the actions of Great Britain, Germany, and France to repeal the resolution that lifted sanctions on Iran in 2015 were procedurally flawed and therefore cannot have any effect.

He also claims that Israeli and American attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in June "fundamentally changed the situation, making the repealed resolutions obsolete and irrelevant".

His letter adds that Tehran will not recognize any attempt to extend, revive, or enforce UN sanctions.
