(Patria) - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Monday that all reasonable diplomatic channels should be used to reduce tensions with the United States, but at the same time emphasized that caution and distrust towards Washington are "absolutely necessary".
His statement comes ahead of the expiration of a two-week truce between Iran and the US, which expires on Wednesday, and uncertainty about the continuation of negotiations is growing.
According to announcements, American representatives are expected to arrive in Islamabad today for talks on the Iranian issue. However, there is no confirmation from Tehran yet whether the Iranian delegation will participate. State media in Iran, citing unnamed sources, report that there are currently no plans for a new round of negotiations, with the reasoning that the US demands are "excessive and unreasonable" and that Washington often changes its positions.
Tensions are particularly high in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has increased control over maritime traffic. At the same time, the US continues the blockade of Iranian ports, and on Sunday, it took control of a vessel that attempted to break this blockade.
Both sides accuse each other of violating the truce. Pezeshkian stated that American actions, including the blockade, show how Washington is returning to "old patterns of behavior" and moving away from the principles of diplomacy.
