Iranian billionaire Babak Zanjani has been sentenced to death for corruption, BBC News reports, according to the Patria News Agency.
Zanjani was arrested in December 2013 on charges of having retained billions of dollars that his companies earned from oil sales. He denied the charges. Along with him, two other men were sentenced to death for financial fraud, and all three must return the embezzled funds.
One of the richest Iranians was sanctioned by the US and the European Union for helping Iran evade previously imposed oil sanctions. Zanjani admitted to selling millions of barrels of Iranian oil to Turkey, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates using internet companies. His wealth is estimated to be worth $13.5 billion.
