Iranian Revolutionary Guards threaten protesters with 'decisive action'

(Patria) – Iranian Revolutionary Guards have warned participants of anti-government protests that they will take 'decisive' action if they do not withdraw, regional agencies report.

Protests against rising fuel prices, which began on Friday, have spread across Iran. Demonstrators are also demanding the resignation of top religious leaders. In just three days, at least 100 banks and dozens of buildings and vehicles have been set on fire, reports the Jerusalem Post.

The trigger for the mass protests is the recent announcement of a fuel price increase of at least 50%.

The government has shut down internet services to prevent the use of social media for organizing protest marches.

These demonstrations are considered the largest since 2017, when 22 people lost their lives in protests against poor living standards.

Economic sanctions, further tightened due to the Iranian government's violation of the nuclear deal and the consequent rise in tensions with the US, also contribute to poor living conditions.
