Iran: Our response to Israel will be controlled and will not cause escalation

(Patria) - Iran has signaled to Washington that it will respond to the Israeli attack on its Syrian embassy in a way that avoids escalation, and that it will not act rashly.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdolahian conveyed Iran's message to the US during a visit to Oman on Sunday, Reuters writes.

That Gulf state has often acted as an intermediary between the two enemy countries.

The White House declined to comment on whether it had received messages from Iran, but announced that the US had made it clear to Tehran that it did not participate in the attack on the embassy in Damascus.

A source from the US intelligence community is unaware of the message sent via Oman, but told Reuters that Iran "was very clear" that its response would be "controlled" and would avoid escalation.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that Israel "must be punished", and that it will happen.

Israel has not confirmed responsibility for the attack on the embassy, but the Pentagon has announced it.

The attack killed an Iranian general and represents a major escalation of tensions that have spread across the region since the start of the war in Gaza.
