(Patria) - Iraq has reached an agreement with Iran that will allow Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani told the Al Jazeera media network.
Abdul-Ghani confirmed that negotiations between the two countries on this waterway are still ongoing. Iran, which controls the strait, has effectively blocked maritime traffic in the area since the beginning of the war. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Iranian energy commission stated that Iran's oil production and exports will continue unimpeded.
This news comes at a time when Donald Trump has in recent days called on US allies to engage more in securing the Strait of Hormuz, given that reduced oil exports from the Persian Gulf continue to affect global markets.
At the same time, the first passage of a tanker with non-Iranian crude oil through the strait with the tracking system activated has been recorded, which happened for the first time since the beginning of the war.
