Indian woman learns to read and write at 92

(Patria) - A ninety-two-year-old Indian woman sat in school desks for the first time six months ago and finally learned to read and write, becoming an example for other women in her village.

Salima Khan, born around 1931 and married at 14, had long dreamed of learning to use numbers and letters. When she was a child, there was no school in her village.

Six months ago, accompanied by her grandson's wife, she set off for school in Bulandshahr, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and finally began her education alongside children younger than her by eight decades.

Her story gained attention after a video was posted on social media showing her counting to 100.

- My grandchildren used to trick me into giving them more money because I couldn't count the bills. Those days are over - she told the Times of India.

India's literacy rate is around 73 percent, according to the 2011 census.

School principal Pratibha Sharma said that the teachers were initially hesitant about the idea of teaching Salima Khan, but she quickly convinced them with her passion for learning.

- We didn't have the heart to refuse her - Sharma told the Times of India.

Following the case of the 92-year-old Indian woman, 25 women from her village decided to learn to read and write.
