(Patria) - US President Donald Trump said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally assured him that his country will stop buying Russian oil, AP reported.
The change, which the Indian government has not confirmed, would bolster Trump's efforts to pressure Moscow into negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine.
"There will be no oil. He is not buying oil," Trump said.
The change will not take effect immediately, he said, but "over a short period of time."
The Indian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to AP's request for comment.
Trump is frustrated by his inability to force an end to the war in Ukraine, which began with Russia's invasion nearly four years ago. He has expressed dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he increasingly describes as the main obstacle to a solution, and is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday.
India is the second-largest buyer of Russian oil, after China. Trump already penalized India in August with higher tariffs on imports to the United States.
