Hunt: Karadžić verdict important for international justice, Britain committed to seeking justice

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, commenting on the verdict against Radovan Karadžić, says that this "verdict is of great significance for international justice and confirms previous convictions of Karadžić for genocide in Srebrenica and increases his sentence to life imprisonment".

"Our thoughts are with the thousands of victims and their families. This outcome will not erase their pain, but we hope it will bring them some comfort. We remain committed to achieving justice for the victims. We will continue to support the work of the tribunal and other organizations seeking justice, supporting survivors, and striving to find and identify those still listed as missing as a result of the conflict in the region," Hunt said.

He adds that Britain's obligation to continue seeking justice is in line with the Joint Statements on War Crimes and Missing Persons, led by Britain and signed by prime ministers at the London Summit on the Western Balkans in 2018.

"The UN Security Council established the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals to continue the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, including charges for war crimes from the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia," the British Foreign Secretary recalled.
