(Patria) - Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has been hospitalized since Monday due to complications following a minor elective medical procedure, Air Force Major General Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, said on Friday, AP reported.
It was the department's first acknowledgment that Austin had been admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Ryder said on Friday that it was unclear when the secretary would be released from the hospital, but said he was “recovering well and expects to resume his full duties today.”
He said this was “a developing situation,” and due to privacy and health concerns, the department had not publicly announced Austin's absence.
In a statement, Ryder said that at all times, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks “was ready to act and exercise the secretary’s authorities, if needed.”
Austin (70) spent 41 years in the military, retiring as a four-star Army general in 2016.
