Historic Meeting: Trump Accepts Kim's Invitation for a Summit

WASHINGTON, (Patria) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has invited US President Donald Trump to a meeting, and Trump has said he will accept the invitation, marking an unprecedented turning point in the relations between the two countries, the BBC reported.

South Korean officials in Washington, who announced that the two leaders could meet as early as May, conveyed Kim's message to Trump verbally and stated that the North Korean leader is "committed to denuclearization".

The head of South Korea's National Security Office, Chung Eui-yong, who met with Kim in Pyongyang earlier this week, informed reporters about the planned meeting after talks with Trump at the White House, Tanjug reported.

North Korea has not yet issued any official statement on the current developments.

The US President confirmed on his Twitter account that he will meet with Kim by May.

"A meeting is planned," Trump wrote.

Trump stated that "great progress" has been made, but that sanctions against North Korea will remain.

Trump's spokesperson, Sarah Sanders, said that the time and place of the meeting between the two leaders will be determined later.

No US president has ever met with a North Korean leader.

The US and North Korea do not even have formal diplomatic relations, the AP agency stated.
