Hezbollah officially confirms death of leader Hassan Nasrallah

(Patria) - Lebanese Hezbollah has officially confirmed the death of leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Hezbollah stated that Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli army airstrike carried out on Friday in the southern region of the capital, Beirut.

They confirmed that some other high-ranking Hezbollah officials were also killed along with Nasrallah.

Hassan Nasrallah was a political leader who served as the 3rd Secretary-General of Hezbollah, succeeding Abbas al-Musawi, who was killed by Israeli forces in February 1992.

He was born as the ninth of ten children in a Shiite family in Bourj Hammoud, Matn district, eastern suburb of Beirut, on August 31, 1960, where his father, a resident of the city of Tyre in the south of the country, came to find work.

Nasrallah, who was 15 years old when the civil war in Lebanon began in 1975, returned with his family to his hometown al-Bazuriye in Tyre, and there he joined the Shiite Amal movement.

Nasrallah, who attended religious education in schools called "hawza" in the Shiite centers of Iraq and Iran, later returned to Lebanon and studied at a school founded by Abbas Mousavi, the leader of the movement.

He joined the Hezbollah organization after Israel attacked Lebanon in 1982. He was elected Secretary-General of Hezbollah on February 12, 1992, after Abbas Mousavi was killed by Israel in 1992.
