(Patria) - The dismissal of the Chief of Staff of the US Army, General Randy George, and General David Hodne, surprised military leaders and caused deep concern among defense officials. Questions are being raised about the consequences of this decision on the war in Iran, as well as on the long-term plan for introducing new technologies and tactics into the army, writes Axios.
George and Hodne are the latest in a series of generals and high-ranking officers dismissed by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. These sudden departures have reshaped the top of the Joint Staff, intelligence agencies, and key combat commands.
According to statements from two US officials, George's dismissal is reportedly due to a clash of personalities, not a disagreement over the strategic direction of the Army. One of them described the dismissal amid a war as "insane".
General Hodne was appointed head of the newly established Transformation and Training Command (T2COM) late last year, which aims to accelerate the development and deployment of new technologies. This organization emerged from the Army's Transformation Initiative, which George himself helped lead. "This doesn't seem like a particularly strong and confident decision," commented one of the officials on Hegseth's move.
The dismissals come at a sensitive time, with elements of the Army's elite 82nd Airborne Division deployed in the Middle East. The Army is also responsible for integrated air and missile defense in the region.
"So, you have a four-star general actively working to get equipment and people to the battlefield – to protect American forces – and you fire him? In the middle of a war?" a third US official told Axios.
In an interview with Axios on March 20, General George emphasized that the war in Iran highlights the need to strengthen domestic arms production. "It all comes down to how do we produce these things faster," he said at the time. "And that applies to everything – not just interceptors. Every missile. Everything we do."
General Christopher LaNeve will assume George's position as acting chief. He was previously Hegseth's aide and was recently appointed Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, filling the vacancy left by the sudden retirement of General James Mingus.
According to one of the US officials, LaNeve had previously expressed doubts about whether the Army was moving "too fast and too far" with reforms. The fate of the T2COM Command, established only a few months ago, remains unclear for now. On Friday morning, the official website still displayed a photo of General Hodne as commander.
