Hegseth Dismisses Army Chief George as War with Iran Intensifies and Oil Prices Surge

(Patria) - Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth forced the retirement of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George on Thursday, April 2, according to a Pentagon statement, ending his expected four-year term more than a year early, as U.S. military operations against Iran intensify, Reuters reports.

George was the highest-ranking officer in the Army, a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and served as the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Army. The timing of his dismissal is significant as it occurs amid a war with Iran and reports that Washington is considering a risky ground invasion to seize Iranian enriched uranium.

The dismissal comes as the U.S. military carried out a major strike on Iranian infrastructure on Thursday, bombing a bridge connecting Tehran and Karaj, which partially collapsed.

The strike followed a prime-time speech by President Donald Trump on April 1, in which he threatened to bomb Iran "back to the stone age" unless Tehran agreed to terms favorable to Washington.

"General Randy A. George will be immediately retired from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army. The Department of the Army is grateful to General George for his decades of service to our nation. We wish him all the best in his retirement," Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement.

George, who was confirmed by the Senate in 2023 and took command in September of that year, was expected to remain in office at least until the summer of 2027, according to four officials. His abrupt departure marks the latest development in a significant purge of senior military leadership by Hegseth, who has dismissed more than a dozen high-ranking officers, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General C.Q. Brown and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti.

General Christopher LaNeve, who served as Hegseth's senior military assistant, is expected to take over as acting Chief of Staff of the Army.
LaNeve previously commanded the 82nd Airborne Division.
George previously served as the senior military assistant to former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during the Joseph Biden administration from 2021 to 2022, which may have influenced Hegseth's decision.

"We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a change in leadership within the Army," a senior Defense Department official told CBS News.
