SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The names of streets in the city on the Neretva have been discussed for a long time, and things were pushed forward after the international community also requested that certain names on the signs be replaced.
On July 14 this year, councilors in the Mostar City Council adopted a harmonized proposal from a previously formed working group, and a change of names was ordered for several streets bearing the names of fascists and Ustashas.
The authorities were given a precise deadline by which to implement this decision on the ground, but the disputed signs, as confirmed to “Glas” by the Deputy President of the Mostar City Council Velibor Milivojević (SNSD), who was also a member of the working group tasked with changing street names in that city, have still not been replaced.
- We checked, and the old signs are still there after all this time, even though we all welcomed with joy at that City Council session the maturity to start changing street names. At that time, we adopted a decision to change the names of a total of six streets that bear the names of representatives of the fascist regime. We all expected that the competent services would fulfill their obligations within the set deadlines, but that did not happen - said Milivojević.
He recalled that after the City Council's decision, that body had an obligation within 30 days to give instructions to the competent cadastre service - the department for urban planning and construction - regarding the aforementioned change of street names.
- The City Council did that. After that, the service had 30 days to enter into the register, mark and arrange house numbers and street names in accordance with the adopted decision. Unfortunately, we are witnesses that even more than three months after the decision was made, and a month after all deadlines expired, there is no change in Mostar. The disputed names are still there - says Milivojević.
Given such an outcome, or rather complication of the situation, this issue could, as he announced, be reopened at the City Council session scheduled for Monday.
- Certainly, one of my councilor questions will be directed precisely to the competent service. I will demand an answer, but also the culprit, because what the City Council adopted has not been implemented - concluded Milivojević.
According to the city government's decision, Mile Budak Street should be returned to its original name - Alekse Šantića, while Vokića and Lorkovića changes its name to Tina Ujevića. Rafaela Bobana will become fra Ljudevita Laste, and by removing the name of Đuro Spužević, the famous Mostar cartoonist Ismet Ico Voljevica gets his street. The current Jure Francetić Street will be renamed to Humska, and Tabornika Ive Zelenike Street will be called Ciglana.
