(Patria) - United States Vice President Kamala Harris pledged support for Ukraine and, in a veiled reference to Donald Trump, her electoral rival, said those who want Ukraine to trade land for peace with Russia support "surrender proposals", Reuters reported.
Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, spoke alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, a day after Trump attacked him for not striking a deal with Russia that Trump said could end the war.
The Vice President said she would work to ensure Ukraine prevails in the war, now in its third year, and achieves a just peace. She then criticized former President Trump, her Republican opponent in the November 5 election, without naming him.
She said that "there are some" in the United States who would force Ukraine to give up large parts of its territory and abandon its security relationships with other nations.
"These proposals are the same as (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's proposals, and let's be clear, these are not proposals for peace. Instead, they are proposals for surrender, which is dangerous and unacceptable".
Trump has said US aid to Ukraine is a waste of money and refused to say whether he wants Ukraine to win. This week, Trump said the US is giving "billions of dollars to a man who refuses to make a deal" and added: "There was no deal he could make that wouldn't be better than the situation you have now. You have a country that is destroyed."
