Chaos in Mannheim: Car plows into pedestrians, at least one person dead!

(Patria) - A car plowed into a crowd of people in the city of Mannheim in western Germany on Monday, media reports.

The newspaper Mannheimer Morgen reports that at least one person is dead, according to witness statements at the scene.

Heavily armed police officers are at Paradeplatz and are blocking bridges near Ludwigshafen, the Independent reports.
One eyewitness said they saw the driver speeding and hitting a crowd of pedestrians on the main shopping street, at the market square.

- You only see injured and dead, and you don't know what to do - said one man at the market.

The police have not yet released details on whether there are any casualties.

The German newspaper Bild reports that the car was a black SUV, according to the BBC. A police operation is underway. Police have called on citizens to avoid the city center. Information on a possible perpetrator or any motives cannot yet be provided.

A large number of emergency and rescue services are in the city center.
