(Patria) - Violence erupted in front of EU institutions in Brussels when police tried to disperse protesters demonstrating against COVID measures with water cannons.
In several places, protesters set fire to various objects, and police were deployed on the streets of Brussels.
Police also used tear gas in response to a group that was throwing various objects at the police. Several protesters caught up in the clashes wore hoods and Flemish nationalist flags.
Police said 35,000 protesters gathered on the streets of Brussels. The protesters also damaged several police cars with sticks and metal bars.
The demonstrations, called "Together for Freedom", were mainly aimed at banning unvaccinated people from places such as restaurants and bars. Europe is struggling with another wave of infections and several countries have tightened measures despite high vaccination rates.
