Hamilton, Mississauga, and Brampton Mark 30th Anniversary of Srebrenica Genocide

(Patria) - On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide, presentations and receptions were organized in the city councils of Hamilton, Mississauga, and Brampton, under the auspices of the Institute for the Research of Genocide Canada (IGK).

The presentations, supported by facts and documents used in the trials against the military and political leadership of the Republika Srpska entity, led by Ratko Mladić and Radovan Karadžić, were met with attention and empathy. The mayors and council members were informed about the greatest crime in Europe since the Holocaust, as well as about Canada's role in the process of global education and institutionalization of the culture of remembrance.

It was particularly emphasized that the goal of these activities is to ensure that Canadians distinguish facts from propaganda, and that they confront truth and justice. Canada is recognized as a leader in institutionalizing the culture of remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, and as an example of the world's response to attempts at denial and revisionism.

Following the presentations, the mayors and council members of Hamilton, Mississauga, and Brampton clearly stated that they stand with the victims of the genocide, on the side of truth and justice. They supported:

the declaration of July 11th as the Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide Victims,

the introduction of genocide education into educational institutions,

the preliminary construction of a memorial dedicated to the victims of the genocide.

Special plaques, a book about Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a brochure about the Srebrenica Genocide were presented to the mayors.

“Our obligation is to preserve the truth, to seek and fight for justice, to remember the victims, and to pass on the memory. Not to hate or seek revenge, but to teach new generations and Canadian society about the difference between truth and lies. If Canada remembers – the world will remember,” stated the Institute for the Research of Genocide Canada.
