Hamas refuses to release Israeli hostages until a ceasefire is established in Gaza

(Patria) - Hamas yesterday confirmed that Israeli forces killed the group's leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza and reiterated that hostages abducted from Israel a year ago will not be released until a ceasefire is reached in the enclave and Israeli soldiers withdraw.

- Sinwar died fighting the occupation army until the last moment - said Khalil al-Hayya, Sinwar's deputy who lives in Qatar and represented Hamas during several rounds of ceasefire negotiations, as reported by VOA.

Al-Hayya adds that Hamas will not return the hostages "before the end of the aggression and withdrawal from Gaza".

Hamas in a statement hailed Sinwar as a hero for "not retreating, for holding a weapon and confronting the occupation army".

The Israeli army released a video of Sinwar, allegedly before his death, showing a man sitting on a chair in a damaged building, severely wounded and covered in dust. He then raises his hand and throws a stick at an Israeli drone.

In photographs later released by the Israeli army, the body of a man is seen, half-buried in rubble with a head injury.
