Angela Merkel's computer hacked

One of the computers in the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel was hacked as part of a cyber attack on the Bundestag in May, German newspaper "Bild" reported, according to the Patria news agency.

The newspaper, without citing sources, pointed out that this hacker attack was more extensive and larger than initially estimated and that the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, had great difficulty limiting the damage from this cyber attack, AFP reports.

As part of this attack, one of the computers in Angela Merkel's office in the Bundestag was infected with a virus, and "Bild" states that this computer was one of the first on which the attack by malicious software known as a "Trojan horse" was detected.

According to the German newspaper, the virus was detected on Friday on five computers in the Bundestag. A spokesperson for the conservative ruling party CDU, led by Merkel, said they could neither "confirm nor deny" the media reports.

It is not yet clear who is behind this cyber attack, and AFP reminds that a pro-Russian hacker group carried out an attack on the websites of Angela Merkel, the German government, and the Bundestag in January.
