SARAJEVO, (Patria) - US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the US embassy there from Tel Aviv could harm peace in the Middle East, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.
- I think the decision made on Wednesday could harm" peace efforts - he told CNN.
This is an opinion not shared by US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, who stressed hours earlier that the decision would help the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Tens of thousands of protesters again took to the streets on Sunday in countries in the Middle East and around the world to protest Trump's decision, which was announced on Wednesday.
It also met with disapproval from numerous political leaders, especially in Europe.
Nikki Haley said she firmly believes the decision will spur the peace process. She added that they were aware the decision would cause dissatisfaction, but emphasized that it required courage.
- When you make decisions, you know that some will perceive them negatively and others positively.
Immediately after Trump announced his decision, Guterres said on Wednesday that the status of Jerusalem can only be resolved through direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians and recalled that he has always been "against any unilateral measure".
- There is no alternative to a two-state solution with Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and Palestine - he added.
