Group of Republicans in Congress to Reject Biden's Victory

(Patria) - Republican Senator Ted Cruz will lead a group of 11 Republicans who will challenge Joe Biden's victory in Congress next week in a symbolic move that can hardly prevent the Democrat from taking office, agencies reported on Saturday.

Senator Josh Hawley was the first to announce earlier that on January 6, he would object to Congress confirming the results of the Electoral College.

All senators are to be sworn in on Sunday when the new Congress convenes.

In a statement released on Saturday, senators led by Cruz stated they would ask Congress to establish a committee to investigate possible "election fraud".

Within ten days, the committee should conduct a review in all states where the two presidential candidates were tied.

The statement does not specify which states are involved.

If this review is not conducted, "on January 6, we will reject the electors from the disputed states," the signatories stated.

According to the US electoral system, the Electoral College confirms the election results from the polls, and on December 14, the college confirmed that Biden had won 306 electoral votes, and Donald Trump 232.

Both houses of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate, are to confirm these results at their convening session on Wednesday, which is largely a ceremonial procedure.

Republican Donald Trump refuses to admit that Biden won the election on November 3 and has tried to challenge the victory with numerous lawsuits alleging electoral irregularities and fraud, but all his lawsuits have been dismissed.

In the House of Representatives, where Democrats have a majority, more than a hundred Republican representatives will vote against confirming the election results, CNN reports.

However, in neither house do the rebellious Republicans have enough votes to succeed in their mission.

President Joe Biden is scheduled to be sworn in on January 20.
