Greta Thunberg condemns ecocide in Ukraine during visit to Kyiv

(Patria) - Environmental activist Greta Thunberg on Thursday condemned the environmental chaos caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the lack of international response to the disaster, AFP reported.

„Ecocide and destruction of the environment are a form of warfare... as Ukrainians know all too well by now, and Russia as well,“ Thunberg said during a visit to Kyiv as part of an international delegation investigating the environmental consequences of the conflict.

„That is why they deliberately target the environment, people's lives and homes, and therefore destroy lives...“, she added.

Thunberg spoke at a press conference together with Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak. She and the rest of the delegation also met with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The destruction of the Kakhovka dam in the southern Kherson region on June 6 flooded vast parts of the Kherson region. The disaster killed dozens of people and forced thousands of others to flee.

„I do not think the world's reaction to this ecocide is sufficient,“ Thunberg said.

„I think no reaction could be sufficient. I suppose we need to make more space for people affected by these disasters to tell their stories and share information about what is happening on the ground,“ she said.
