Fires raging across the region: Up to three years in prison for starting fires in FBiH

Fires are burning at several locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The situation is most severe in Bosanski Grahovo and Bileća, where local authorities are requesting helicopter assistance, as they are powerless against the raging inferno, reports the BH news agency Patria.

A fire near Trebinje consumed hundreds of hectares of vegetation and forest a few days ago. Fires also burned in Međugorje, then in Zvirovići near Čapljina, in Miletina near Ljubuški, in Gornji Gradac near Široki Brijeg, in Rakvica near Sarajevo...

The situation is most severe in neighboring Croatia. The images from the Pelješac peninsula look terrifying after a fire ravaged the area.

Jutarnji list reports that the fires that broke out late Saturday afternoon on the island of Korčula, where about five hundred hectares of forest were burned, and on Monday evening on Pelješac, where more than 400 hectares were burned, are still active and not under control.

Ivica Šimić, commander of the Firefighting Unit in Ljubuški, told the media that everything indicates that the fires in Ljubuški are being caused by an arsonist, who starts fires in three places daily.

According to the Criminal Code of the Federation of BiH, you can receive a prison sentence of three months to three years for starting a fire. Therefore, firefighting brigades warn to be careful with open fires, writes NAP.
