(Patria) - On this day in 1992, members of the Army of Republika Srpska committed one of the most horrific crimes during the siege of Sarajevo.
It was the Massacre in Vase Miskina Street, today's Ferhadija.
Serb forces fired three mortar shells from the direction of Borija, killing 26 and wounding 108 citizens of Sarajevo.
The day before the massacre, Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev visited Sarajevo and, among other things, an agreement was reached on a ceasefire. In accordance with this agreement, a truce was to come into effect at 6 AM on May 27, 1992, and the citizens of Sarajevo were "encouraged" to stand in line for bread, which had been delivered to a store on Vase Miskina Street around 9 AM, and dairy products were soon delivered nearby. While bread was being distributed, at 9:55 AM, shells were fired at this location.
This was the first mass killing of citizens in besieged Sarajevo during the aggression from 1992 to 1995. The Vase Miskina Street Massacre is one of 230 examples of mass killings of civilians during the siege of Sarajevo. No one has been prosecuted for this crime.
During the siege, 11,541 citizens of Sarajevo were killed, including 1,601 children, and more than 50,000 civilians were lightly or seriously wounded. It is estimated that around 500,000 projectiles were fired at Sarajevo during the siege. An average of 329 shells were fired at the city daily from the positions of the Army of Republika Srpska.
