SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Mostar today commemorates the brilliant military operation and unblocking of the city 29 years ago, and June 30, 1993, is one of the most significant dates for the survival and life of the citizens of this part of BiH, as well as the survival of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole.
From May 9 and the HVO attack on the eastern part of the city until June 30, 1993, Mostar was under total blockade.
It was one of the bloodiest sieges of a city in history. The few and poorly armed fighters of the Army of RBiH found themselves in complete encirclement along with tens of thousands of civilians from Mostar and refugees from all over Herzegovina.
In impossible conditions of constant artillery fire on civilian facilities, the fighters of the Army of BiH and the MUP of RBiH, although poorly equipped and few in number, despite heavy casualties, managed to defend Mostar and the civilian population, as well as the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina in these areas. Foreign reporters could not understand how the Army of BiH, despite being completely surrounded, and without enough weapons, water, and food, managed to hold on in a narrow strip of a few hundred meters between two aggressors, and even take the military initiative, Vijesti.ba reports.
On June 30, 1993, they began to break out of the complete encirclement. They captured the North Camp and the Bjelopolje Valley and linked up with the units of the Army of BiH in Jablanica. This was a key military operation for unblocking, the only one carried out from the inside without anyone's help, which enabled the Army fighters to endure until the end in the fight for the Defense of Mostar.
Seven heroes lost their lives in the operation on the North Camp, led by the legendary commander and hero Mithad Hujdur Hujka.
