Gligor Begović sentenced to 13 years in prison for crimes in Batković camp

After the conclusion of the main trial, the panel of Section I for War Crimes of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina rendered a verdict finding the accused Gligor Begović guilty of committing the criminal offense of war crimes against the civilian population, reports the Patria news agency.

For the aforementioned criminal offense, the Court sentenced the accused Gligor Begović to a prison term of 13 (thirteen) years.

The accused Gligor Begović was found guilty of having, during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the time of the armed conflict between the Army of Republika Srpska and the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the detention center "Batković" on the territory of the municipality of Bijeljina, where civilians of Bosniak ethnicity were detained, held in inhumane conditions, subjected to killings, intentional infliction of great suffering and injuries to physical integrity and health, as a member of the Army of Republika Srpska, acted contrary to the rules of international humanitarian law, violating the provisions of Article 3, paragraph 1, points a) and c) of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of August 12, 1949.

By the same verdict, the accused Gligor Begović was acquitted of the charge that by the actions described in points 9, 11, 14, and 17 of the amended indictment he committed the criminal offense of war crimes against prisoners of war.

Also, the verdict rejected the charge that the accused Gligor Begović, by the actions described in points 1 and 1a) of the operative part of the indictment, committed the criminal offense of war crimes against prisoners of war, the Court of BiH announced.
