(Patria) - The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced on Wednesday evening that an investigation into possible war crimes in Ukraine has been opened, following a request from a number of member states of the court.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, and a million Ukrainians have fled their country escaping the war.
"An active investigation begins following the request of 39 member states of the court," announced Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan.
"Already in the preliminary examination of the situation in Ukraine, my office has found reasonable grounds to believe that crimes within the jurisdiction of this court have been committed there. The Prosecutor's Office will now begin collecting evidence on allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide committed on any part of Ukrainian territory against any person," Khan said.
Ukraine has been a member of the ICC since 2014, following Russia's annexation of Crimea, while Russia does not recognize its jurisdiction.
