SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The exhibition "Witness", by BiH academic sculptor and painter Adis Lukač, was opened today at the Sarajevo City Hall as part of this year's cultural event "Days of Preporod 2021", organized by the Bosniak Community of Culture – BZK Preporod.
It is an exhibition of paintings, drawings, and sculptures (18 works) based on the theme of the Srebrenica genocide, focusing on the motif of the exodus as a fragment and symbol of the horror and trauma produced and still produced by the echo of that tragic event.
The president of BZK Preporod, Prof. Dr. Sanjin Kodrić, emphasized the importance of culture and art as a medium that connects people and spreads knowledge, and contributes to the culture of remembrance and the culture of memory.
"We must not leave the traumatic events of our past solely to the memory of individuals. If we do, those memories will fade with the biological departure of individuals who remember the genocide and feel it with every fiber of their being," said Kodrić.
He stressed the importance of the culture of collective memory as a permanent category that ensures that the Srebrenica genocide will be preserved "as a warning, as a memory, and as a testimony of each of us".
The author, Adis Lukač, said that the focus is on the people who survived the executions and found their way across the path of death.
"After reading the material, testimonies about the genocide in Srebrenica, I decided on the portrait as a motif that best suited his idea. Art is the most lasting element that can sustain collective memory. What is most important, the message of this exhibition is absolutely not to point to the negative, but to seek and return the positive," said Lukač.
