(Patria) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday condemned the "accelerating deterioration of humanitarian conditions" in Gaza, AFP reported.
"The last lines of survival keeping people alive are collapsing," his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement. The UN Secretary-General "laments the increasing reports of children and adults suffering from malnutrition".
More than two dozen Western countries on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire, saying suffering had "reached new depths" as the Israeli army expanded its operations to the town of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.
"The Secretary-General notes that the intensification of hostilities in recent days comes at a time when the humanitarian system is being obstructed, undermined and endangered," Dujarric said.
"A new evacuation order in parts of Deir al-Balah – home to tens of thousands of people – is pushing people into ever more desperate conditions and further displacement and limiting the United Nations' ability to deliver life-saving assistance."
