Frost in Brussels: Great Britain does not want EU supervision

Great Britain's chief Brexit negotiator David Frost presented a vision of relations with the EU after Brexit and the transitional period on Monday.

Among other things, he said that the EU does not see the point of Brexit at all if it thinks it will continue to supervise Great Britain's actions.

- If they think we will accept EU supervision on issues that involve equality, then they simply do not see the point of what we are doing, Frost said in Brussels, adding that 'the basis of our vision is the possibility to create laws that suit us and to exercise our rights like any other non-EU country'.

Addressing the ULB university in Brussels, Frost emphasized that the whole point of Brexit was to prevent the EU from interfering in Great Britain's rules and regulations. He added that the British government will not seek a longer transitional period, which otherwise expires on December 31, 2020, even though most consider it too short for an agreement on trade relations given the excessive differences in the two sides' positions.

- On January 1, 2021, Great Britain will fully restore its political and economic independence. Why would we want to postpone that, Frost asked.

His comments suggest that the transitional period is more likely to expire without an agreement with the EU than Great Britain's willingness to compromise on key issues.

The EU negotiating team expects Great Britain to maintain close trade relations, but in accordance with EU rules, which Great Britain has repeatedly rejected as a possibility.

The EU side claims that it would ultimately accept Britain operating under its own rules, but that a trade agreement would have fewer benefits for them in that case.

This was also emphasized by the chief EU negotiator Michel Barnier, who categorically claims that the EU will not agree to British terms for a trade agreement just to avoid a costly, chaotic 'no-deal' situation at the beginning of 2021.

Negotiations officially begin at the beginning of March, writes Euronews.
