(Patria) - The leader of the German Christian Democrats, Friedrich Merz, has been elected German Chancellor in the second round of voting in the Bundestag.
325 deputies voted for Merz, which is 15 more than in the first round, when he received 310.
Merz failed to win the necessary majority in the Bundestag in the first round of voting, which represents an unexpected blow to his new coalition with the Social Democrats.
Merz (69), who has led the Christian Democratic Union CDU/CSU since February, won at the federal level.
He then agreed on a coalition with the Social Democrats (SPD), but received only 310 votes in the lower house of parliament.
He needed at least 316 votes to be elected in the first round.
